5 Essential Habits for Feeling Productive & Happier

This is Zuzana Mukumayi and you are listening to the Screw Being Unhappy Podcast. In this segment, Coaching insights, I share the coaching goodness from real coaching conversations, so that you too can get INSPIRED to make your life even better.

My client has just come from a holiday with his family. His goal was to feel like a star. And he made it!

Today, we will talk ENERGY. If you have it, your life is amazing. You’re productive, you are confident and happier. If you don’t have it, everything is just harder. You’re less productive, less confident and not happy as you could be.

For my client, feeling like a star was about not worrying about the constant need to work really hard to be successful. He wanted to relax, but his belief that he needs to work hard all the time was taking the joy away.

The holiday was a success. My client came back elated, because of the sudden abundance of energy. In one day after holidays, he was able to do tasks, that have been pending for months. And he wanted to keep it that way. This holiday was an eye opener to him when it comes to the importance of energy and the implications it had for his productivity.

Contrary to the belief that most of us are taught, activities that make us energized are not “nice to have” and something to do only “after work” or when we finally “have enough time”. They are a prerequisite. We need to focus on the activities and habits that bring us energy if we want to achieve our goals in life. We need that energy to keep going. Every day, even when things are hard or not going according to the plan.

Here, I’d like to offer you new perspective that’ll dramatically improve your life: “Having energy is number one priority, it is not an afterthought. It is not luxury, but a necessity.”

These are the five things that will significantly improve your energy levels:

  • Sleep
  • Better food and staying hydrated
  • Exercise
  • Focus
  • Doing things that you love

If you haven’t felt that much energy lately, ask yourself this> Am I getting enough sleep? Am I eating well and drinking enough? Do I exercise? When I work, do I focus with all my attention reducing distractions or multitasking? Do I do what I love?

This is where you start. Pick one, and start creating new habits around that. With the new mindset of energy not being a nice to have, but a prerequisite.

The choice is yours. If you want to be more productive, confident and happier, work on your energy levels.

Energy is Not a Luxury—It’s the Foundation of Success

Most of us are conditioned to believe:

❌ Work comes first, energy comes later

❌ Rest is a reward, not a priority

❌ Productivity means pushing through exhaustion

But here’s the reality: If you don’t prioritize energy, you’re sabotaging your productivity.

Think about it: When you’re energized, you work faster, focus better, and feel more confident. When you’re drained, every task feels overwhelming, procrastination kicks in, and self-doubt creeps in.

Energy isn’t a “nice to have.” It’s the foundation of success.

So, how do you start managing energy like a high-performing entrepreneur?

If you don’t prioritize energy, you’re sabotaging your productivity

Feeling exhausted or unmotivated? Check in with yourself: Are you actually giving your body and mind what they need to function at their best? And of course, this isn’t just a nice idea—science backs it up! When you focus on the right things, you naturally boost your energy, productivity, and overall well-being.


 

1. Prioritize Sleep for Peak Performance

A lack of sleep is a productivity killer. When you’re sleep-deprived, your brain slows down, focus disappears, and decision-making becomes harder.

Quick Fix: Set a consistent bedtime, avoid screens 30 minutes before sleep, and aim for 7–9 hours each night.

 

2. Eat Well & Stay Hydrated

Your brain and body need fuel. Poor nutrition leads to sluggishness, sugar crashes, and mental fog.

Quick Fix: Eat whole, nutrient-dense foods, drink enough water, and avoid excessive caffeine or processed foods.

 

3. Move Your Body Daily

Exercise isn’t just for fitness—it’s a natural energy booster. Movement increases blood flow, releases endorphins, and improves focus.

Quick Fix: Even 10–15 minutes of movement (a walk, stretching, or a short workout) can dramatically increase energy levels.

 

4. Improve Focus & Reduce Distractions

Multitasking drains mental energy fast. Shifting between tasks makes you 40% less productive.

Quick Fix: Use deep work sessions—focus fully for 60–90 minutes, then take a break. Turn off notifications and batch similar tasks together.

 

5. Do More of What You Love

Joy is one of the biggest energy boosters. If your entire day is filled with things that drain you, your energy will stay low.

Quick Fix: Schedule at least one daily activity that brings you joy—whether it’s reading, music, creative work, or time with loved ones.
